Gran Turismo 7 Achieves 'Tangible' Realism on PS5 with Haptics, Ray Tracing, More - Push Square

Kaz is back in another video

Gran Turismo has always been striving for the most realistic experience possible, and so each iteration is a step forward towards that goal. Of course, Gran Turismo 7 is just around the corner, and the first game in the series to hit Sony's latest hardware, PlayStation 5. While it is coming to PS4 as well, it's the current-gen version in the spotlight today with a new "behind the scenes" video from Polyphony's biggest car nut, Kazunori Yamauchi.

The petrolhead reckons PS5's extra bells and whistles afford GT7 a "tangible" level of realism, pointing out a few areas where this version of the game shines. Firstly, the DualSense's haptics and adaptive triggers are a big point of difference; Kaz talks about one example of how the triggers are used, emulating the feel of brakes that may give way when they lock up.

Next, he discusses how ray tracing in Scapes pushes the level of realism that much further, saying that the "CGI" look found in GT Sport is vastly improved upon with the advanced lighting tech. Finally, Kaz says 4K, HDR, and 60 frames-per-second performance also enhance the game, making it feel more realistic and achieving a "natural feeling" he's been chasing since the start.

When you see the game in motion, it's hard to argue — it really does look stunning, but then GT always does. Are you excited for what PS5 will bring to Gran Turismo 7 in March? Get behind the wheel in the comments section below.

Having grown up alongside PlayStation, Stephen has developed a wide knowledge of video games, from AAA blockbusters to the smallest indie gems. He also has the Platinum for The Witness, so there’s that.

I still don't get it......this guy can sit here and advertise for Sony all he wants but when you see the actual gameplay, not replay, not scapes, the gameplay: the game doesn't look great.

It looks like just a slightly better resolution game than the last one and without destruction and better physics there's a lot missing from reaching that benchmark of realism. so it's marketing driven nonsense to say that haptic triggers brings it to tangible realism; we're not driving our cars with PS5 controllers.

I maintain that Sony needs to invest in a better driving simulator game via a different developer. One that will really push the boundaries and not continue to reuse the base assets and foundation that is frankly archaic at this point.

But it was confirmed Ray-Tracing is only utilized during replays correct? So we won't even see it while playing through the game 99% of the time? Part of me wishes they'd aim for the Ratchet 40fps strategy along with the new VRR update to allow ray-tracing during gameplay.

Man, I'm getting excited to play this. Glad it's going back to it's SP roots. Hope the trophies don't completely whoop my ass.

Speaking from experience, and my own personal opinion — These games can't be fully appreciated with a controller or even a entry-level wheel setup. It wasn't until recently that I've found how great GT Sport is...

@BrockSmith To be fair, even the current-gen console leader Forza H5 doesn't have Ray Tracing in-game — only when viewing the cars in the garage, and that's only when in Graphics mode...

But I agree, I wish ALL game developers would give us the Insomniac options of "Fidelity", "Performance", and "Performance Plus w/ Ray Tracing". Guess they can't all be great like Insomniac!

@BrockSmith the question is: would real RT make such a difference in a racing game with fixed camera positions and the limited movements on the race track? Good screen space reflections are fine for this genre in my opinion. Even lightning and shadows can be done very will without RT in a racing game. I would prefer fluid 60 fps here.

Don’t get me wrong, RT will be important for the next steps in visuals. But the overall hype around „no RT = I’m not satisfied with the game“ is a bit too much.

Is anyone else kind of getting tired of the Dyson-esque melodramatic prose this guy keeps doing in these commercials? The whole tone and prose in these spots seems completely over the top for talking about a gen 9 console racing game.

Nice. Keep them cool video coming. I love it. 😅🤗

I'm just chuffed that the used car dealership is back.

4K 60fps Sony exclusives, that’s what I signed up for 👌

Really looking forward to this. Especially career mode which I’ve missed. 4K HDR and 60fps. Nice. Not sure why people are bemoaning the lack of ray tracing. This is a track game. It would be a waste of processing power in such a static and predictable environment. My hope, as with all racing games, is that rubber banding is non existent. Also, that the always online requirement doesn’t mean endless seasonal events and DLC.

Game looks great. I just wish I didn't find driving Sims so boring. I'd love to be able to get into this game.

Any news on damage? I read a while back there will be a reworked damage model. Can't claim any sense of realism if the cars just bounce unscathed from a 150mph bang

I'll be happy when this actually goes gold.. 😬

This game was the reason I sat up at 4am in the morning when PS5 pre orders first went live last year.

I was slightly disappointed (although not entirely surprised, it is Gran Turismo after all) when the game was delayed but now that it's almost here my excitement is building 10 fold

@KundaliniRising333 agreed, completely silly video, and unsurprising from polyphony, and that it still will be most probably completely behind the more complex, deep, interesting sims out there.

As if higher resolution etc is what gts needed most to get more realistic lol.

After seeing the matrix tech demo - this looks rubbish and PS4 style with sharp and shiny surface. This next gen is a joke, honestly regret both ps5 and Xbox series x now

How long till this game is released on PC?

If I can't crash over a country wall when those brakes give way, into a kids picnic and get several points on my license, then that's not tangible realism.

It'll be some uncanny valley of "It's realistic to drive but not realistic enough" I reckon.

Really looking forward to this, but I'll be paying with a wheel not the controller lol

@DarthKiwi Same here, Fanatec DD Pro on its way to me!

There were a few instances in that video that were real life. Lol. No way a game looks that good....well...maybe on Playstation 😝

Anyone know the song they are using in the background of the trailer?

I would love to see this game on hardcore racing sim rig. Hopefully it has some compatibility.

Actual game play, handling, track variety and career improvements mean more to me than realistic car models which they already had covered. From what I have seen it looks like it is just another Gran Turismo, same UI, same gameplay loop, same everything. I'll still buy it but I am not overly excited for it.

@kingbreww 1440p at 120 would be better

I'm glad they are going back to their roots with the used cars and actual car modifying but I'm very annoyed with one thing that everybody overlooks, The field of view is fing bullsh!t.

@BrockSmith what new VRR update?! We don't have it and have heard nothing about it since the ps5 released. If how Sony initially handled it with their tv's is any indication we won't see it at all. I wonder if they just aren't capable enough to implement it correctly.

I still think it was a bad decision of Sony getting rid of Evolution Studios. I would be more excited for a new Driveclub or especially a new Motorstorm than than another GT.

@KundaliniRising333 No date is confirmed but a few people on podcasts have said they heard it’s about to drop: https://www.techradar.com/news/ps5-vrr-update-could-start-rolling-out-soon-as-sony-readies-new-tv-firmware-update

I agree they need to do better with their TV’s but I have LG so doesn’t necessarily effect me. Looking forward to it though

@BrockSmith nice I hope so!

yah I almost went with that Sony on sale last fall until I did some searching about promised features in future updates that took over a year and when released essentially broke the tv's performance. It's actually the TV in question in your first link. Unfortunately I went with a Samsung which is dope on all aspects other than hdr which is broken on Samsung due to a tone mapping algorithm that you can't change. Almost nabbed the cx but not sold on oled tvs in bright rooms.

Kicking myself now though, as they were the same price when I chose the samsung. "Leaves in a pool," problems though I suppose, given the amount of suffering in the world.

@KundaliniRising333 but that's what exactly Japanese game makers have been doing for last...7~8 years. Rehash, reskin, remaster, sell. The most inovative industry fell asleep and stuck to the formula "don't fix what's not broken". Clunky physics, archaic menus, sound, gameplay, bqdically everything is now a kind of fetish that JRPG dweeb-fans enjoy and praise.

A racing game will be truly next-gen for me when I don't see a lick of pop-in, especially when looking in the driver's seat rear-view, and when the dust trails going over dirt sections actually look real and stick around in the air for a bit. Same with the tire mist from rain. When they fade and just disappear it sort of ruins it for me. Dirt Rally 2.0 did a great job and maybe is the most convincing trails I've seen yet. Can't wait to see how this game turns out! Who am I kidding, I'm buying it anyway!

Looking forward to this. It will last me all gen aswell so its a day oner for me.

These games... it's a love-hate thing. The clinical presentation did always put me off. The racing itself is difficult and "slow" compared to arcade racing games (read: realistic). But there is a nice sense of accomplishment when you finally break through the sky high difficulty curve and score a top time on a track.

Never used a wheel and just don't have the space to dedicate that set-up to a single game, probably has something to do with it.

DriveClub to me was the perfect balance between arcade and sim, and had much higher fun factor but, but ah well.

@KundaliniRising333 the game looks the same as the replays and what the hell does him sitting have to do with anything? I promise...you guys just like to complain about everything.

I'm not a racing guy and haven't played one in while but it does look way better in some areas and in other areas need a little work but it certainly isn't just resolution. I've seen the past gt. IF you don't understand what haptics are and what they do...you shouldn't talk about how realistic it can make it seem. thanks for pointing out the obvious smh.

what is archaic about a realistic racing sim? if you want a racing game with the physics of fast and furious...go play forza.

@eagletrippin wdym they can't be appreciated with a controller?

@NEStalgia nah you just narcissistic as hell to be criticizing a guy sitting and talking in a video

@Styledvinny79 sell both to people who will appreciate them then since you are spoiled.

@middyone not a bad idea tbh

@Styledvinny79 glad I could help lol. you gonna regret it but since your super impatient...you might as well.
