Almond farming is nuts

California has over 2 million acres of almonds planted in the driest parts of the state. It takes 1,900 gallons of water to produce one pound of almonds and one California company produced a surplus of 1 billion pounds of almonds this year alone—using enough water to supply all the homes in the state for a year.

Most almonds get exported, meaning that all that water is being subsidized by California taxpayers while big exporters ship our water overseas. It’s not fair.
