PGA Tour: Cam Smith gets penalty before final round, fans go nuts

Cameron Smith is competing in the PGA Tour playoffs before likely leaving for LIV Golf, where he will reportedly be paid $100 million to play in the Saudi-funded exhibition league.

To say things have been a bit awkward at this week’s first round of the PGA Tour playoffs would be an understatement. First, Smith refused to talk about LIV before play began.

Then golf fans went nuts when Smith didn’t seem happy about Scottie Scheffler walking through his putting line during the first round.

Things then took a wild turn on Sunday when it was announced that Smith had been issued a two-stroke penalty for something he did in Saturday’s third round, which dropped him from two back of the lead to four strokes back.

Cam Smith docked 2 strokes for an improper placement of his ball on the fourth hole during the third round. FedEx Cup lead and World No. 1 just got a lot harder to achieve today.

Here’s the PGA Tour’s statement:

Statement on Cameron Smith ruling at FedEx St. Jude Championship pic.twitter.com/15P5i2FxM3

— PGA TOUR Communications (@PGATOURComms) August 14, 2022

“Prior to the start of the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, Cameron Smith was assessed a two-stroke penalty for a breach of Rule 14.7 (playing the ball from the wrong place) on Hole No. 4 during the third round where he was operating under Rule 17.1 (when ball was in penalty area). Smith’s score has been adjusted and he will begin the final round at 201 (-9).”

Here’s the mistake that he made:

Cameron Smith has been penalized two strokes for improper placement of the ball in the penalty area in Round 3.

He now begins the final round trailing by four.

The ball is clearly on the red line so there you have it.

Absurdity. At some point, the score is the score and it needs to be final. Start of the fourth round should render the prior day's scores final. https://t.co/eu6PAa7tkH

Oh boy. The Cam penalty just announced for a bad drop on 4 yesterday. Almost 24 hours after the fact. Makes you wonder 🤔 pic.twitter.com/PPGX5dZ9vk

Almost 24 hours after it happened? https://t.co/dp4joKZzw0

Don't let the door hit you on the backside on the way out, Cam.. https://t.co/UgoeedbM74

This is the Smith infraction. Ball needed to be ahead of the line after the drop, not on it. So the penalty.

But where was the @PGATOUR official watching the live broadcast to rule on this immediately? On a coffee break? Or are we back to calling in infractions? https://t.co/Ynpk7lQGbx

Well I'm sure this won't be controversial 🙃 https://t.co/WYVxdoUXws

This is so absolutely ridiculous to do this in the middle of the final round almost 24 hours after his round. Terrible for golf. https://t.co/F0IB1h90Xi
